Far Eastern University (FEU) alumna and former chief editor of ‘Advo’ Maria Majella Tampinco was given a recognition at the 18th Gawad Tagapuring mga Akademisyan ng Aninong Gumagalaw (Gawad Tanglaw).
Tampinco was a graduate of FEU under the program of Psychology. She then became a Guidance Counselor, Senior High School Faculty and Moderator, and Creative Director of Teatro Maria at St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila, then worked under Mandaluyong Manpower And Technical Vocational Training Center (MMTVTC) as Officer-in-Charge Administrator.
In an interview with FEU Advocate, Tampico shared the details behind Teatro Maria, “This theater group challenges students to reach their full potential using their God-given talents in the field of Performing Arts. They developed self-awareness, self-confidence and self-discipline imbibing the attributes of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Mother Ignacia Del Espiritu Santo.”
She added that the group paved the way as an outlet to students under counselling and disciplinary probation as their shows are usually musicals, adaptations, and other pieces are original compositions that embed morals that are good for all ages.
The group has conducted performances for Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) Sisters in the infirmary, for children in their adapted communities.
It has also started to conduct and share workshops to the people in their chosen communities.
Looking back at her starting days, Tampinco recalled her FEU professors such as Dr. Romeo Flaviano Lirio Jr. that encouraged her to try art.
She also said that Lirio believes in performing art for kids may aid their misdemeanors and Mr. Hector Perez, who told her that art is a good tool to help students gain self-confidence and self-awareness.
According to her, the University’s official student publication has also helped her to be persistent and patient at all times under her editorship in 2000.
Tampinco is also a part of Woman Organization (Soroptimist International of Mandaluyong), an organization that plans to introduce performing arts to young women and children who experiences abuse and discrimination.
