As part of their campus tour, multi-awarded Director Lavrente Indico Diaz or known as Lav Diaz and Filmmaker Paul Soriano together with Hazel Orencio, Bernardo Bernardo, and Joel Saracho visited Far Eastern University (FEU) last March 19 at Arts Building Room 206.
Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis is directed by Diaz that tackles the unexplored history of the Philippines. Diaz said that the film will give new knowledge about history.
The team conducted an open forum for all students who are willing to learn about the film ‘Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis’. They also shared their experiences while making the film.Diaz added that this film is his love letter to Philippines. “Kung gagawa ka [film] para sa bayan mo, para sa kultura, ibigay niyo lang (If you’re going to make [film] for your country, for your culture, just give it),” he said.
He also shared his inspiration in making the film. “Marami sa atin ang nakakalimot. Hanapin natin ang katotohanan (Most of us forget. We should look for the truth), and it’s your [students] responsibility to know that,” he added.
Diaz, a director known for long shots and hour-long films, wanted Hele to be as natural as it is, “In-adopt ko lang 'yung paggawa ng praxis na 'yan. Walang manipulations masyado, mas truthful (I just adopted that praxis. The lesser manipulations, the more truthful),” he said.
Further, Soriano shared his feelings in working with Lav Diaz. “It was great opportunity for me to work with him. When you make a film its destiny,” he said.
Meanwhile, one of the actors, Bernardo shared his experiences in the film. “One thing I learned, you need to have the courage to make mistakes. When you trust the director and the director trusts you, that is when the magic happens,” he said.
Orencio also shared her experiences as an actress and is honored to be part of it. “Ito 'yung film niya [Lav Diaz] na pinaka risky (This is his [Lav Diaz] most risky film). We’re so happy that we contributed in this film,” she said.
Saracho gave his advice to the aspiring filmmakers. “Make films, make mistakes, and you’ll find it. Huwag matakot magkamali, ang pagkakamali ay isang parte ng creating (Don’t be afraid to commit mistakes, mistakes are part of creating),” he concluded.
The event ended with giving certificate of appreciation and a meet and greet of students with the team.
