FEU chessers thwart UP, Ateneo to stay undisputed after 10 rounds

Far Eastern University (FEU) Male and Female Woodpushers stayed atop of the leaderboard after 10 rounds in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 82 chess tournament last Sunday, October 13 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Quadricentennial Pavilion.
In men’s division, the Morayta-based squad edged out the University of the Philippines (UP) at 3-1, dominating the standings with a total of 31 points followed by UST with a 26.5-point tally, while National University (NU) ranked at third spot with only 19 points.
First board seated RK Sevillano easily handed a one-point advantage crushing UP’s Shaun Gan, 1-0 and second seated John Merill Jacutina also reigned victorious winning over Joshoy Rosanda at 1-0.
Darry Bernardo, defending the third seat succumbed a 0-1 loss against Brent Alanan, while FEU captain John Jasper Laxamana prevailed over Joemarie Resurreccion at a 1-0 notch.
On the other hand, Female Woodpushers outlasted the Ateneo De Manila University (AdMU) Lady Eagles at 3.5-0.5, claiming the top spot with a total of 29 points and registering a 7-2-1 win-draw-loss card.
Reigning queens De La Salle University (DLSU) remained at second spot with 27 points, while AdMU notched a 23-point tally at third.
“Mas naging determinado pa po ang [women’s] team na makamit ang championship (The women’s team became more determined to notch the championship),” shared Woman National Master Jemima Valdez.
With only four rounds remaining, the Male Woodpushers will next face the DLSU Green Woodpushers, while their female counterpart will battle it out over NU Lady Bulldogs both games to be held on Saturday, October 19 at the same venue.
