The Institute of Architecture and Fine Arts Student Council (IARFA-SC), together with the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary - Far Eastern University (UAPSA-FEU), organized an exhibit showcasing late Filipino National Artist, Architect Leandro Locsin.
The exhibit was opened from October 12 to 14 at the Nicanor Reyes Hall Ground Floor. Sharing the reason why they chose Leandro Locsin among the other artists, IARFA-SC Vice President Adam Alcantara said: “The 1993 National Artist, he is the only National Artist who did not study abroad…he learned locally…he was one of the candidates of the Priktzer Prize which is an equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Architecture. So imagine an architect of its kind, locally produced, talking about foreign and local designs. So, he’s a very distinct person, siya ‘yung nag-iisa (he’s one of a kind).”
In line with the commemoration, a forum entitled “The Modern World of Leandro Locsin” was held at the University Library Special Collections Room on October 12.
Senior Architect at Leandro V. Locsin Partners Alexander Mayoralgo participated as the guest speaker for the event. Mayoralgo talked about Locsin’s experiences in life, including his years as an artist.
He also discussed Locsin’s place in modernity and how their firm upholds the late architect’s legacy. “Mr. Locsin was really a prolific thinker, in the sense that he loved music, he loved art, he loved philosophy and literature. In his time, [in] the 50’s or 60’s, all these artists and architects were collaborating, so [a] thing we could learn from him is the spirit of drawing from so many multiple perspectives that makes your architecture richer,” Mayoralgo shared.
